What is the hole punch in the absentee ballot return envelope for? I just got my absentee ballot for the November election. Why is there a hole punch in the envelope? I know it's supposed to be there, but what's the purpose? If they hole punch your ballot through there, won't it possibly punch out the vote you marked? I just want to know what the hole is for! It says nothing about it in any of the instructions.

True Patriot (Obama 08) replied: "Hmm.... couldn't tell ya. Obama / Biden 08!!"

tonalc2 replied: "I believe it's so they can determine if there is anything in the envelope. But I'm just guessing."

Justin H replied: "I'm in Northern California and our ballots - both absentee and in person come with a little security envelope. The security envelope has a small hole (about 3/8") right in the middle on both sides. I don't know for certain, but I would guess it has to do with the machinery that the ballots are run through for counting. Either the hole is so the machine knows the envelope isn't empty, or it's to help the machine remove the ballot from the envelope."

Ghebagrl replied: "So they can tell without opening the envelope that you actually sent the ballot back. Absentee ballots are not counted until after the polls close. So they do not want to waste time by opening empty envelopes ."

What are the individual disks from a hole punch called? What are the individual disks from a hole punch called?

Dee J replied: "singular confetti"

answerthis replied: "confetti"

open4one replied: "There may not be a name for them in the singular. They have no use, so people tend to throw them away. However, most people allow them to accumulate in the hole punch's receptacle designed for that purpose, and only think about them when it gets full, and even then give the collection of them no thought about what they are called until they spill all over the carpet. Then they say "Get the vacuum cleaner so I can pick all this crap up.""

picador replied: "In the U.S. it is called a "chad.""

stephen k replied: "some would say "selvage", others say "circle junk""

Actingwizoo replied: "a chad, like the ballots in Florida that didn't get counted correctly."

Press C replied: "anti-hole"

Can anyone tell me if a three-ring binder exists that's fitted to the acme animation standard hole punch? I'm an animation major, and I have to carry around hundreds of frames at a time to shoot pencil tests. I work with Acme's three-hole punch registration standard, but I can't find a binder with rings set for that hole set. It's extremely inconvenient carrying these sheets around loose, and hard to keep them organized. If anyone knows where I can find something like that, please tell me. If not, then I'll settle for any other practical means of storage. Thanks.

JoaNEE replied: "Hi, sorry but i have no idea how to help you in this question. This is the only way i could know contact you, because i don't use AIM and you don't allow email. Though i thought you could be the one who could help me alot.. thanks. :)"

Is there a way to make 4 even holes on paper with a 2 hole punch? I need 4 holes in a sheet of A4, but I only have a 2 hole punch. Is there anyway I can evenly get the four holes without trying to line it up? Hmmm, didn't think there was. I guess I have to invest in a 4 hole punch.

chocaholic replied: "Fold the paper in half then punch the holes"

Janet B replied: "Take your blank paper to a print shop. We always had a hydraulic drill press in any print shop or publication firm that I ever worked in. The holes are neat and tidy (more so than trying to do-it-yourself). And, if you mentally estimate (or slightly "guesstimate" the maximum number of sheets of paper you'll be needing --round that figure up a good 10 or 20 pages for good measure and to "cover you" for the unforeseen eventualities. ) Follow what I'm saying? You might call around to ask print shop managers for some special deal like, "If I buy all my paper products here; can your shop throw in free paper hole drilling for the next ream (500 sheets) or so of paper? " Talk their "lingo", "shop talk", jargon....that's the word for it. Good Luck, friend. God bless you, too."

hmacca replied: "There is a way, using the paper guide on the punch. As I remember (not having one to hand) if you move the paper guide to the shortest position, then punch the paper, turn the paper over then punch it again, you will get the 4 holes you need. You'd better practice on spare paper first to get the guide in the right position."

what is the little plastic thing with a 3 hole punch? There was a small black plastic piece that came with my 3 hole punch. I have no idea what it does.. I even asked staples and they were clueless. Does anyone know?? Its about an inch long and looks like it fits around one of the pistons that makes the holes.

Chirp replied: "Some paper punches have a way to disable the middle hole-punch so as to only make 2 holes (I'm not sure why people would want to do this, but I've seen it in product descriptions as a selling point) - the piece you have sounds like it might be used to block the middle punch."

Artwork made out of three hole punch papers? Does anyone know what this is called....artwork that is make up of three hole punch papers and glued to a black canvas...The little hole punch papers are pasted on the canvas to create some sort of rounded art.

But no small two hole punches. gator girl- i appreciate you going on forever- but unfortunately, i've been to staples, i've looked online at the other merchants you reference (except wal mart) and cannot find them. that's why i asked here...thanks for the other- well thought-out answers.

yahoooo! replied: "We are in the same boat. Looks like they don't make this anymore. If you could find one, can you let me know? Thanks."

venus8926 replied: "Have you tried Corporate Express?"

MrsZ replied: "I purchased my two hole punch at Amazon.com. Here is the link:http://www.amazon.com/UNV74222-25-Sheet-Capacity-Two-Hole-Punch/dp/B00094GENE They cost $4.25. I carry mine in my briefcase. It's not huge and you can lock it so it doesn't spring open. If this is not satisfactory, please do not blast me as you have other people that took the time to answer your question. That's not what this forum is about."

Rusty1109 replied: "I got mine at Quill.com for $14.79!"

How can you hole punch a transperency? Every time I try, the 3-hole puncher breaks. I've even tried a single hole puncher and it won't work as well. It is paper thin, however, it gets stuck in the puncher because it is not as easily breakable as paper.

Ladee_Dr. replied: "That's a new one. Transparency paper is well....paper thin. What in the world? Unless, you have the transparencies that have the script of white (removable) tape on the left edge, I don't see what the problem is. I hope you figure it out Good Luck"

karenhouse01 replied: "I've always used a 3-hole punch. But, then again, I've always used a heavy duty paper puncher. Those that you find in Wal-Mart won't cut the mustard. You will have to go to Staples or Office Depot to get the type of hole puncher that can punch 25-50 sheets at once. I paid $25.00 for mine last year. The problem you are having comes from the fact that the force needed to push down of the transparency cannot finish ripping through. Conduct a test: go to Staples with a transparency and use try out a heavy duty puncher. If it works, but it."

sunfried_84 replied: "I do not hole punch my transparencies. I put them in those clear sheet protectors because I had the same problem with my hole puncher. I also put all papers in the sheet protectors so I do not have to hole punch my original copies of anything."

teacherhelper replied: "try putting a piece of paper on top and underneath the acetate; if that doesn't work, try warming it with an iron (with a dish towel on top, of course) - that way, it won't be as brittle"

ajustice96 replied: "Putting them in plastic sleeves works really well. That way when you are finished you can put it directly in the binder/page of where you are using it from."

cutiepii replied: "Yes, I have a Kinkos tech do mine. Theirs are industrial. Usually the transparencies I use are the heat resistant ones that I can run through a copier machine, so they're thicker. However, thinner ones should work just as well."

Hope L replied: "Hole punchers work fine for me. But you have to make sure there's no adhesive where you're punching and that you are only doing one page at a time. I did break one hole puncher by trying to punch several at once."

What is the name for the devices that protect the holes in paper after you use a 3 hole punch.? They look similar to washers on a nut, but smaller and would fit where the hole is punched in a piece of paper. I cannot find what they are called. Trying to order some online. Thanks.

matman replied: "reinforcements are stickers that come in many colors and clear too. grommets are metal and work best if the page is laminated."

protoham replied: "Staples® Reinforcements for Hole-Punched Pages, White"

lettheeaglesoar replied: "Stick on hole reinforcers. You can buy a 200 pack for 88 cents here: "

Volusian replied: "They are called ‘GUMMED REINFORCEMENTS.’ Save your money though. Simply place a length of transparent scotch tape at both the top and bottom of the inside edge of the page BEFORE you punch the holes. The tape has three advantages over the reinforcements: 1. you don't have to lick it. 2. it is transparent and 3. It won't fall off like gummed reinforcements will when they dry out over time. Quite frankly, I haven't actually seen a gummed reinforcement since 1972."

My wife bought me a really nice used leather ledger. can anyone tell me where I can find a six hole punch? It was obviously used for business checks at one time, so there are six brass rings in it. I do not want to put checks in it but other types of construction related media but to do that i need a six hole punch. Thank you

punky replied: "Office supply store like Office Depot."

Texblueeys replied: "Go to any search engine (my favorite is) and type in "six hole punch". You will get a long list of places where you can buy one."
